Background: The opening singles of the 1976 Federation Cup lawn tennis finals were played on Sunday (29 August) at the Spectrum Stadium in philadelphia, U.S.A.
SYNOPSIS: One of the more interesting matches was between Kerry Reid of Australia and Rosemary Casals of the United States. In the first set, Mrs. Reid went down 1-6 to some keen volleying and all-round aggression by Miss. Casals, who used her smashing ability to advantage.
This was the final game of the first set and Miss. Casals showed that she was quite capable of taking the set point off her service.
But, after losing the first set and trailing one game to three in the second, Mrs. Reid increased her control of the match with some splendid driving. Five superb games in a row gave her the second set. After that, there was no looking back for the Australian who won the match 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.
