  • Description

MORE THAN TWO MILLION PEOPLE ARE REPORTED TO HAVE TAKEN PART IN DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST RISING PRICES IN JAPAN ON SUNDAY (27 FEB). IN TOKYO, 320,000 PEOPLE MET IN SIX CENTRES -- ABOUT 200,000 OF THEM AT THE 1964 OLYMPIC VILLAGE -- TO PROTEST AT DEMONSTRATIONS ARRANGED BY THE JAPANESE SOCIALIST PARTY AND THE FEDERATION OF GENERAL COUNCILS OF LABOUR UNIONS.

THERE WERE SIMILAR DEMONSTRATIONS IN 22 OTHER CITIES THROUGHOUT JAPAN.

HOUSEWIVES JOINED IN THE PROTEST AGAINST SPIRALLING PRICES AND ACCUSED THE GOVERNMENT OF CONTRIBUTING TO THIS BY THEIR APPROVAL OF INCREASES IN TRANSPORT FARES. THEY PROTESTED PARTICULARLY AGAINST THE FARE RISES, CLAIMING THAT THEY WOULD AUTOMATICALLY LEAD TO HIGHER COMMODITY PRICES ALL ROUND. WAGES COULD NOT COVER THIS, THE DEMONSTRATORS SAID.
