  • Description

THE INJURED UNITED STATES FLYER, LT. HAROLD WELCH, IS EXPECTED TO BE RELEASED TODAY (SATURDAY), FROM A SOVIET ARMY HOSPITAL IN MAGDEBURG, EAST GERMANY.

SINCE THE PLANE WAS SHOT DOWN ON MARCH 10TH, THE SOVIET AUTHORITIES HAVE ALLOWED UNITED STATES MEDICAL OFFICERS TO VISIT LT. WELCH IN HOSPITAL, BUT HAVE NOT GIVEN ANY OTHER INFORMATION ABOUT HIS TWO COMPANIONS WHO PARACHUTED FROM THEIR RB-66 RECONNAISSANCE PLANE.

(IN A PROTEST NOTE DELIVERED ON MARCH 11, A DAY AFTER THE PLANE WAS SHOT DOWN, THE SOVIET UNION ASSERTED THAT IT WAS ON A SPYING MISSION -- A CHARGE WHICH HAS BEEN STRONGLY DENIED BY THE UNITED STATES, WHO SAY IT STRAYED INTO EAST GERMAN AIRSPACE WHILE ON A TRAINING MISSION.)
