Background: Over forty thousand spectators crowded the circuit to watch the Motor Cycle Grand Prix and the Grand Prix of Austria on the autobahn near Salzburg-Liefering, today May 1st.
The 350 cc. event had a surprise ending: it was won by a 23-year-old junior, the up and coming Paddy Driver, No. 65, of South Africa. During the first 12 laps Driver, Hempleman, and the well-known Australian ace, Jack Ahearn, formed a group which fought tooth and nail to the finish. Strangely enough Ahearn, who was held to be the most skilful and experienced rider was left behind in the final stretch and came home third.
Numbers 58, 59 and 60 (350 cc.) did not start.
Young Driver set up a record in his class when he reached a speed of 117.9 kilometres an hour in the 14th lap.
The results were as follow: 350 cc., 15 laps, 76.5 kilometres, 25 entrants:- 1. Paddy Driver (Sth Africa) Norton, 39 mins 55.7 secs, (115.28 km per hr.) 2. John Hempleman (New Zealand) Norton, 39 mins, 57 secs, 3. Jack Ahearn (Australia) Norton, 40 mins 16.4 secs.
The Grand Prix of Austria in the 500 cc class went to the German Ernst Hiller on a BMW.
Results of the 500 cc event, 102 Km, 25 entrants, 20 laps: 1. Ernst Hiller (Germany) BMW, 50 mins, 18.1. secs (121.58 kms per hr) a new record for the course. 2. John Hemplexan, (New Zealand) Norton, 50 mins, 41.5. secs. 3. Jack Forrest (Australia) BMW, 50 mins, 48.5 secs.
The fastest lap was achieved by John Hempleman in 2 mins 28.4 secs at 124 km per hr.
