  • Description

President Banda honoured Malawi's war dead at a ceremony at the cenotaph in Blantyre yesterday (Sunday, November the 8th.)
The chiefs of the Army and police force also laid wreaths at the cenotaph.

Dr. Banda, unlike other black leaders of Southern Africa, has always approved the possible sale of British arms to South Africa. He has described as "nonsense" suggestions that South Africa would use submarine and antisubmarine aircraft for internal suppression or external aggression. He has maintained friendly relations with South Africa and the South African Prime Minister, Mr. Vorster, has visited Malawi - his first official visit to a foreign country.

Recently President Houphouet-Boigny of the Ivory Coast said he favoured a policy of negotiation and dialogue with South Africa, but several other African leaders have attacked this suggestion.

SYNOPSIS: President Banda of Malawi has honoured members of the country's fighting forces who died in the two World Wars.

A ceremony was held at the Cenotaph in Blantyre on Sunday to mark Remembrance Day. President Banda laid the first wreath in the ceremony.

After laying the wreath The President observed the traditional moment of silence at the memorial.

Among others to lay wreaths at the ceremony were the commanding officer of the Army and the chief of police. The ceremony was attended by Government and civic leaders as well as diplomats from other countries.

After the wreath-laying came the traditional parade, with members of the ex-service organisations taking part. The ceremony is usually held on the Sunday nearest November the 11th - the date that the first World War ended in 1918.
