  • Description

Mohini, a giant rhinoceros - one of the most valuable animals in captivity - gave birth to her second calf August 19 at Whipsnade Zoom, U.K. Zoo officials said both mother and baby were doing well and allowed visitors in to see them August 23.

Only the 10-year-old mother - 3 tons in weight - and her baby, a male, out in an appearance. Father, a bit thick-skinned and inclined to throw his weight about, was not seen. The baby rhinoceros paced up and down the pen with mother but after too many quizzical stares from local sea-lions, giraffes and zebras decided to disappear from view.

Both Mohini and the father, Mohan, are worth GBP5,000. The calf - weighing 50 pounds at birth - will eventually be worth the same. Their first calf, a female, Mohinija, born in 1957, was sold earlier this year to Milwaukee Zoo in the United States. The two calves were the only two ever born in captivity in Britain. Only two other great Indian rhinoceros calves have been born in captivity in the world.
