  • Description

Troops patrolled main streets and maintained guard on Republic buildings, Jan 26, in San Salvador, capital of El Salvador, the smallest Central American republic, following the military coup, the previous day, suiting the three-month-old left-wing junta.

While the new junta consolidated its position, members of the ousted Government were leaving the country.

An Army statement, Jan 26, said the Army took control "to stop a leftist trend and to lead the nation to authentic democracy." It added the Army had acted now to end the prolonged uncertain situation in the country.

The new junta consists of the former Chief of Staff of the old regime, and colonel and three civilians.

The official casualty list in the coup was two dead and 15 wounded. Other reports said five died and 11 were injured during fighting. Suspects, believed Communist or Castro supporters, were being arrested.
