    THE RESULTS OF THE GENERAL ELECTION IN JAMAICA WERE ANNOUNCED ON TUESDAY (21 FEBRUARY), AND THEY SHOWED A LANDSLIDE FOR THE RULING LABOUR PARTY.

    THE ELECTION MEANT A BUSY TIME IN THE NEWSROOM AT THE JAMAICA BROADCASTING CORPORATION, WHERE A FULL-SCALE OPERATION WAS MOUNTED TO PUT OUT THE RESULTS AS THEY CAME IN. OUTSIDE, CROWDS HUDDLED ROUND RADIO SETS, TO WELCOME OR DISAPPROVE THE SUCCESS OR FAILURE OF CANDIDATES.

    THIRTY-THREE OF THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES BELONG TO THE LABOUR PARTY, GIVING IT A MAJORITY INCREASED FROM SEVEN SEATS TO THIRTEEN. THE DEFEATED OPPOSITION IS THE PEOPLE'S NATIONAL PARTY, LED BY MR NORMAN MANLEY. THEY TOOK 20 SEATS.
