  • Description

THE DEATH TOLL IN THE CHILEAN EARTHQUAKE IS STILL UNCERTAIN AS RESCUE WORKERS PROBE THROUGH THE RUBBLE OF ISOLATED VILLAGES DEVASTATED IN SUNDAY'S TRAGEDY.MORE THAN FOUR HUNDRED PEOPLE ARE BELIEVED TO BE DEAD.WORST HIT WAS THE VILLAGE OF EL COBRE, BUT MANY OTHER VILLAGES WERE DAMAGED BEYOND RECOGNITION.HUGE CRACKS APPEARED IN ROADWAYS, WHILE MANY HIGHWAYS WERE CLOSED BY VAST MUD SLIDES ROLLING DOWN FROM THE HILLS.SANTIAGO, THE CAPITAL, WAS NOT BADLY HIT BUT ROOFING MATERIALS AND HEAVY BLOCKS OF CONCRETE RAINED DOWN ON THE STREETS AT THE HEIGHT OF THE QUAKE.

THE EARTHQUAKE WAS REGISTERED AT BETWEEN 6.5 AND 7.5 ON THE 12 POINT RICHTER SCALE.EARLIER REPORTS ESTIMATED A MUCH HIGHER READING.DEATH AND DESTRUCTION WAS SPREAD OVER AN AREA OF 17,000 SQUARE MILES (44,000 SQUARE KILOMETRES).

THE HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE IN EL COBRE WAS THE RESULT OF THE COLLAPSE OF A HUGE RESERVOIR ABOVE THE SETTLEMENT.AN EYEWITNESS SAID THAT THE HALF-MILE LONG (800 METRES) WALL OF THE RESERVOIR COLLAPSE AND A TORRENT OF MUD AND WATER COMPLETELY ENGULFED PART OF THE VILLAGE.

IN A MINE IN THE DISASTER AREA, ABOUT A HUNDRED MINERS ARE FEARED FATALLY TRAPPED BY A HILLSIDE COLLAPSE.

RESCUE WORKERS RUSHING TO THE WORST HIT AREAS IN CARS AND AMBULANCES FOUND THEIR ROUTE IMPEDED BY LARGE CRACKS WHICH APPEARED IN THE ROAD.IN OTHER PARTS LARGE BOULDERS WERE STREWN ACROSS THE HIGHWAY -- REDUCING TRAFFIC TO ONE LANE.ONE OF THE ROADS CLOSED BY THE EARTHQUAKE IS THE PAN PACIFIC HIGHWAY WHICH RUNS NORTH FROM THE CAPITAL, SANTIAGO.HUGE MUDSLIDES HAVE BLOCKED IT IN PARTS - AND A LARGE BRIDGE HAS COLLAPSED.

A SENIOR POLICE OFFICER WITH THE RESCUE TEAMS ESTIMATED THAT MANY BODIES WERE STILL BURIED UNDER MUD SLIDES, AND IN THE DEBRIS OF FALLEN HOUSES."IF WE WORK SOLIDLY FOR SIX MONTHS, I DOUBT WHETHER WE CAN GET OUT ALL THE BODIES," HE SAID.

IN SANTIAGO, THE CAPITAL, THE EARTHQUAKE CAUSED DAMAGE TO ROOFTOPS AND CORNICES OF HIGH BUILDINGS.BUT COMPARED WITH DAMAGE SUFFERED IN THE WORST-AFFECTED VILLAGES, THE CAPITAL CITY WAS LIGHTLY HIT.TRAFFIC BECAME CONFUSED WHEN THE EARTHQUAKE CAUSED THE BREAKDOWN OF MOST OF THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS IN THE CITY AND THERE WERE SEVERAL SERIOUS MOTOR ACCIDENTS.

THE CHILEAN GOVERNMENT HAS EARMARKED AN INITIAL 1,400,000 DOLLARS (ABOUT GBP500,000 STERLING) FOR THE RELIEF FUND.THE UNITED NATIONS HAS ALSO OFFERED AID.

(IN MAY AND JUNE, 1960, CHILE SUFFERED A SERIES OF CALAMITOUS EARTHQUAKE IN WHICH 5,000 PEOPLE DIED.THE EARTHQUAKE THEN CAUSED MORE THAN FIVE HUNDRED MILES OF THE CHILEAN COASTLINE TO SINK.OFF-SHORE NOW ISLANDS APPEARED AND SEVERAL NEW VOLCANOES APPEAR.LAST WEEKEND'S EARTHQUAKE WAS LESS SEVERE, BUT WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THE LANDSLIDES AND MUDSLIDES THAT WERE CHARACTERISTIC OF THE 1960 EARTHQUAKES.
