Background: Thirty-year-old Martin Adolf Bormann - son of Hitler's deputy Martin Bormann, who disappeared at the end of World War Two - received the mission cross at a small church at Birkeneck, near Munich, May 13.

Bormann junior, who was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest a few years ago and received his religious training in the Order of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, was handed the symbol of his chosen life by Prior Christian Moser of Salzburg.

The same day he left Munich by air for Coquilhatville in the Congo, where he is due to join a German Catholic mission.

Bavarian police acting for the Berlin State Prosecutor's office, who are following up the possible escape route used by Martin Bormann, reported May 13 an "over 50% certainty" that the Nazi leader escaped across the Bavarian Alps into Austria and on to South America in 1947. Bormann was sentenced to death at Nuremburg in his absence. After the war it was believed that he had been killed in Berlin in 1945. This belief is still shared by his son.
