Background: ABOUT 20,000 WORKERS BROUGHT TRAFFIC TO A STANDSTILL OUTSIDE THE LABOUR EXCHANGE IN PARIS TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY) IN A BIG DEMONSTRATION AGAINST WAGE RESTRAINT IN NATIONALISED AND PRIVATE INDUSTRIES.

HUNDREDS OF EXTRA POLICE PATROLLED THE AREA AND AT ONE POINT DEMONSTRATORS SWEPT ASIDE A POLICE CORDON. BUT THERE WERE NO SERIOUS INCIDENTS.

THE DEMONSTRATION WENT ON FOR TWO HOURS. WITH PRESIDENT CHARLES DE GAULLE IN MIND, WORKERS CHANTED "CHARLOT, DES SOUS" -- "GIVE US THE MONEY, CHARLIE".

TODAY'S DEMONSTRATION FOLLOWED A SERIES OF STRIKES IN NATIONALISED INDUSTRIES. UNIONS CLAIM THAT WAGE INCREASES HAVE NOT KEPT PACE WITH INCREASES IN THE COAST OF LIVING
