    MR. JOHN TEMBO, THE MALAWI MINISTER OF FINANCE, IS NEARING THE END OF HIS VISIT TO TAIWAN, WHICH BEGAN ON MARCH 18TH. HE MADE THE VISIT TO SEE TAIWAN'S DEVELOPMENT IN THE ECONOMIC FIELD AND TO EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITIES OF CLOSER COOPERATION BETWEEN MALAWI AND TAIWAN. SHOWN ON FILM ARE HIS FRIDAY (22 MARCH) TALKS WITH VICE-PRESIDENT DR. C. K. YEN AND DISCUSSIONS WITH FINANCIAL OFFICIALS.

    DR. YEN, WHO IS ALSO PRIME MINISTER, EXCHANGED VIEWS WITH MR. TEMBO IN HIS OFFICE FOR HALF AN HOUR ON WHAT WERE DESCRIBED AS 'MATTERS OF MUTUAL INTEREST'. IT IS BELIEVED THAT MR. TEMBO SUGGESTED AN EXCHANGE OF VISITS BY INDUSTRIAL AND TRADE LEADERS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES AS A STEP TOWARDS BETTER UNDERSTANDING AND CLOSER TRADE TIES.

    LATER MR. TEMBO TOOK PART IN A CONFERENCE WITH MINISTRY OF FINANCE PERSONNEL. INTERVIEWED AFTER HIS ARRIVAL, THE MINISTER OF FINANCE DESCRIBED HIS PURPOSE AS BEING 'TO LEARN HOW TAIWAN HAS MANAGED TO DEVELOP THE COUNTRY SO QUICKLY AND SO WELL'. HIS VISIT FOLLOWS THE OFFICIAL TOUR BY PRESIDENT BANDA IN AUGUST LAST. THE PRESIDENT, SAID MR. TEMBO, WAS GREATLY IMPRESSED BY TAIWAN'S AGRICULTURAL PROGRESS, PARTICULARLY IN RICE GROWING.
