  • Description

The bitter fighting in the Lebanese capital,Beirut which has raged for a week killing over 260 people seems to have calmed down.

This followed a meeting on Tuesday (1 JULY) between Prime Minister Rashid Karami and Palestine Liberation Organisation leader Yassir Arafat during which the outline of a ceasefire agreement was reached. Syrian Foreign Minister Abdel Halim Khaddam was also present.

Hopes that the fighting could be brought to an end were also strengthened by the Formation on Tuesday of a new six man civilian Cabinet.

On Wednesday (2 JULY) there was still some sporadic sniper fire in the two southern suburbs of Ain al-Rummaneh and Shiyyah. But these outbreaks were being heavily put down by armoured security forces. This in itself is an indication that the new, tough, 75 year old Interior Minister, former President Camille Chamoun, intends to take a fire hand.

But there are still doubts as to whether the new Government can bring together the many political factions in the country and regain stability.

The fighting began in April between right-wing Falangists and Palestinian commandos.Since then periods of relative calm have been punctuated by days of intense fighting...lately between left and right-wing factions in the country.
