Background: Shoppers in Powis Street, Woolwich, saw film star Margaret Lockwood switch on the Christmas Illuminations. Along the shop fronts thousands of coloured lights went on and gay illuminated nursery rhyme characters twinkled in the darkness, giving a glow of fairyland to suburban London.
The main attraction was Father Christmas and his 100 foot long sledge and reindeer.
The shopkeepers have contributed GBP1 per foot of their shop-fronts to pay for the decorations which were hired from Southend.
