THOUSANDS OF SIKHS TOOK PART IN THE PARADE, WHICH MOVED ALONG TO THE BEAT OF ANCIENT DRUMS, AND THE SHRILL NOTE OF PIPES AND FLUTES. MANY, DRESSED IN OLD CAVALRY UNIFORMS AND RIDING HORSES, GAVE DISPLAYS OF SWORDSMANSHIP -- RECALLING THE LONG TRADITION WHICH HAS GIVEN THE SIKHS THEIR PROUD REPUTATION AS FIGHTERS.

ONE SPECIALLY DARING FEAT OF SWORDSMANSHIP WAS ENACTED BY A YOUNG MAN, WHO BLINDFOLDED, DANCED TO THE BEAT OF A DRUM, AND ENDED HIS DISPLAY BY CUTTING BANANAS ON THE HEADS OF FOUR YOUNG CHILDREN WHO WERE LYING AT HIS FEET.

(NANAK, THE FOUNDER OF SIKHISM, WAS BORN IN 1469 -- CONTEMPORARY WITH LUTHER. HIS NAME MEANS "HE WHO WAS BORN AT THE HOME OF HIS MOTHER'S PARENTS" -- NEAR LAHORE.
