  • Description

On Feb the 21st there were clashes between security forces and rioters in the town of Hama 210 km north of Damascus. Beirut newspapers reported tens killed but in fact there were 5 killed and several wounded. Demonstrators wanted that it be included in the New Constitution that the State would be a "Moslem State". The president, Hafez al Assad had already conceded that the President's religion should be Islam. The following days unrest was reported in the northern towns of Hama, Homs (Syria's 3rd town) and Aleppo. It seems that the Regime's opponents have seized the occasion to provoke unrest in the country putting forwards the religious side of the problem.

On feb 25th, Homs shopkeepers who usually open at 7 AM remained closed. At 9 AM Security men obliged them to open. Film taken around 12 show shopkeepers closing again after men circulating from shop to shop ask them to.
