Jordanian Prime Minister Zeid al Rifai met U.S. Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger for talks in Washington yesterday (6 Aug.). They expressed optimism about prospects for a settlement int he Middle East.
Last week Israeli Foreign Minster Yigal Allon declared Israel's willingness to make "fair compromise" with its neighbors, provided it could keep borders necessary for its defence.
Mr. Rifai told reporters he believed the first move towards peace should be the withdrawal by Israel of some of its forces from the West Bank of the Suez canal, and territories which Israel captured after the 1967 war.
Dr. Kissinger called the talks "positive", "constructive", and "useful". He hopes to meet King Hussein of Jordan in the next few days.
