Background: About 5,000 high school students today held a protest march from the Colosseum to the Ministry of Education protesting for radical reforms in the present antiquated school system. Escorted by police and carrying banners with slogans calling for decent school buildings, more progressive teaching systems and new school curriculums they ended the march outside the Ministry. Two days ago Elementary and High School teachers had conducted a similar march at the beginning of a two-day teachers' strike. The leftwing unions have held and will continue to hold spasmodic strikes throughout the school year in one of Italy's 'hottest' autumns of the last few years involving not only teachers, but industrial and building workers, agricultural workers, hospital staff all protesting for new contracts, economic and social reforms.
