  • Description

The 10,000 metres, the highlight of the first day of the Commonwealth Games athletics programme, was won by New Zealand runner, Richard Taylor, in front of a wildly-cheering crowd of his fellow-countryman at Christchurch.

Mary Peters, from Northern Ireland, pentathlon gold medallist at the last Olympic games, bowed out of international athletics with a win in the pentathlon.

The Canadian girls displayed a remarkable domination in the springboard diving by taking the first three places.

The hot favourite for the 25-lap 10,000 metres was the controversial English runner and world record-holder, David Bedford. But Bedford became caught in a showing and pushing competition with three Kenyan runners -- Juma, Mose and Kiingi. Bedford, who has never won in a major competition, tried to set a fast pace, but his tactics were useless in the face of the Kenyan manoeuvres.

England's David Black and New Zealand's Taylar pulled away at the start of the second last lap. But Taylar had the better sprint finish and hit the tape 15 metres clear, setting a new Commonwealth Games record of 27 minutes 46.4 seconds. Juma was third.

Mary Peters' victory in the pentathlon was a very popular one, but she only just beat the brilliant nineteen year old Nigerian girl, Modupe Oshikoya.

In the springboard diving, three Canadian girls took the first three places. Cindy Shatto took the gold medal with 430 points; Beverley Boyce was second and York third.

At the end of the day, Australia, England and Canada were in the lead with two gold medals each.

SYNOPSIS: The highlight of the first day of the Commonwealth Games Athletics programme in Christchurch was the ten thousand metres.

The favourite was the English runner and world record-holder, David Bedford. But the result was far from certain since Bedford has always run well against the clock but never won a medal.

At the start Shaughnessy of Canada took the lead, with Juma of Kenya and the bearded Bedford tucked in behind.

After nine of the twenty five laps Bedford became involved in a jostling end shoving match with the three Kenyan runners -- Mose, Juma and Kiingi. He found it impossible to get past them and establish a rhythm.

The runners became split into two main groups. The bumping and boring continues in the leading group -- most of it seeming to involve Bedford. Afterwards he told pressmen he had been spiked.

Just beyond the half way stage, Mose of - Kenya was leading with his fellow-countryman, Juma, second, and bedford third.

Bedford tried desperately to get ahead and build a lead, but the Kenyans were two strong from him. Despite Bedford's complaints, British officials said afterwards there were no grounds for making an official protest.

Eventually with two laps to go, Richard Tayler of New Zealand and David Black of England broke away from the rest of the field. Taylor -- a comparative outsider had the stronger finish and breasted the tape fifteen metres clear, setting a new Commonwealth Games record.

In the women's pentathlon, Mary Peters from Northern Ireland, winner at the Munich Olympics, capped a fine carser with another gold medal. Modupe Oshikoya of Nigeria was second.

In the women's springboard diving the Canadian team were all-powerful. The Canadian Cindy Schatto - here doing a forward one-and-a-half somersault with two twists -- clocked up four hundred and thirty points.

    She emerged with gold medal.

Second was her team-mate Severly Boys
At the last Commonwealth Games she won the gold medal, but here the judges awarded her the silver.

Third was another Canadian -- Miss T. York. At the end of the day the Canadians had two gold medals and wee well on the way to equalling their tally of sixty six at the last Games in Edinburgh.
