Background: The Arab League met in Cairo on Sunday (July 15) to discuss internal re-organisation of the League.

Among the important amendments discussed was a proposal that the chairmanship of the Arab League would in future be by rotation in alphabetical order.

The representatives of the League have decided that in future, motions are to be passed by a simple majority vote. Previously a two thirds majority was needed.

The League has also been discussing proposals to increase the pay and leave for many of the League officials.

Syria has suggested a 10 - 20 per cent pay increase for some categories of permanent staff.

Last week Jordan, Syria, Egypt and Kuwait were trying to revive the "Eastern Front" facing Israel.

It is an issue on which Mr. Mahmoud Riad, who was chairing Sunday's meeting, believes there build be united Arab action.

Mr. Riad said that Arab leaders may hold a summit meeting later on the matters which divide them.

Mahmoud Riad, chairman of Sunday's meeting has called for United Arab action on the issue. He added an Arab Summit may be held on matters dividing Arab states.
