  • Description

Crewmen of the cruise liner "Antilles" which ran aground on a reef in the Caribbean on Friday (8th January) and was destroyed by a subsequent fire, arrived back in France on a special flight on Sunday evening (10 January).

The French Line's second-largest vessel was carrying 350 passengers and a crew of 300 at the time of the grounding. All escaped unhurt. at Orly Airport crew members were questioned about the drama.

Few suspected the seriousness of the mishap at the time, and some had been unaware that the fire had broken out on lower decks almost immediately after impact with the reef. Early firefighting attempts nearly put out the blaze, but it spread rapidly making the task impossible. The Chief Petty Officer of the Antilles said that most officers had been "taken aback" by the grounding but there had been no panic during evacuation of the liner. He ruled out the possibility of a navigation error.
