  • Description

Hundreds of cans of peaches, all containing the artificial cyclamate sweeteners, are due to be destroyed in the United States this week.

Last year when the fruit was being grown, most of it in Californian orchards, it was though to be safe to use cyclamates. However reports last October by the Government suggested that cyclamates were dangerous.

Since the report came out no more fruits have been canned with cyclamates, but million of cases of already canned fruit still remain unsold. These will have to be destroyed.

The largest victim of this Government plan is California Canners and Growers Association who stand to lose 15 million (7,800 sterling) dollars. The members want the Government to compensate them, as they don't think t he cyclamate tests were correct. A spokesman for the group gave his views.
