  • Description

JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER EISAKU SATO YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) WATCHED A REVIEW OF SHIPS AND AIRCRAFT OF THE JAPANESE SELF DEFENCE FORCES IN THE BAY OF TOKYO. A TOTAL OF 50 SHIPS AND 60 AIRCRAFT TOOK PART IN THE REVIEW.

THE NAVAL ELEMENTS OF THE JAPANESE SELF-DEFENCE FORCES ARE UNDER THE COMMAND OF REAR-ADMIRAL YAMAMOTO. THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE BOARD OF THE SELF-DEFENCE FORCES, MR MASUDA, ACCOMPANIED MR SATO DURING THE NAVAL REVIEW.

INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENT PROHIBIT JAPAN FROM MAINTAINING "AGGRESSIVE" CRAFT, WHICH INCLUDE AIRCRAFT CARRIERS, CRUISERS AND WARSHIPS. MOST OF THE CRAFT TAKING PART IN THE REVIEW WERE SMALL DESTROYERS EQUIPPED WITH ANTI-SUBMARINE ROCKETS, RADAR AND MINE DETECTION EQUIPMENT. THEIR SOLE PURPOSE IS TO PROTECT THE JAPANESE MERCHANT FLEET FROM SUBMARINE ATTACK.

BUT THERE WERE ALSO NINE JAPANESE-MADE SUBMARINES, HELICOPTERS AND ANTI-SUBMARINE RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT. THE SHIPS -- MANY OF THEM SMALL FRIGATES -- FREQUENTLY ESCORT JAPANESE MERCHANT CRAFT IN ALIEN WATERS.
