    In Salisbury on Thursday (16 August), 99 African students from the University of Rhodesia pleased guilty to public violence charges, arising from a campus riot on 7 August. three other students pleaded no guilty. All appeared in court on August 19.

    More than 150 students were arrested after the riot, which began as a protest against the expulsion of colleagues involved in an earlier disturbance. The first group was demonstrating against alleged racial discrimination at the university.

    In court on Thursday, the Principal of the University, Professor Robert Craig said damage caused during the 7 August riot had been estimated at 7,000 Rhodesian dollars (GBP 4,800 sterling). Five stones had been thrown through the windows of his office.

    The following day, an African girl student turned State's evidence and claimed that violence had been planned at a student meeting before the demonstration.

    The magistrate, Mr. Michael Oelschig, is expected to sentence the accused later his week.
