Thousands of disappointed spectators had to be turned away from this year's world Body-Building Championship in Montreal on Saturday (6 November).

SYNOPSIS: Competitors from 51 countries, all members of the International Federation of Bodybuilders, went before the judges, competing in three separate divisions. After an estimated five thousand would-be spectators were turned away the remainder settled down to be entertained.

The first to be judged were the lightweights. The 23-year-old Mohammed Makkawy from Egypt showed winning form.

After being announced the winner, Makkawy was quick to pose again for the crowd, showing the form that earned him a blue ribbon.

In the middleweight class, Mike Mentzer of the United States was pitted against a Turkish competitor, Ahmet Enenlu, and on the right, another American, Robbie Robinson.

Instead of the usual straight Mr. Universe competition, this year's titles were selected from three separate divisions in an effort to have the event recognised as a sport.

Robinson eventually won his division title and the applause of the crowd was typical of its response throughout the championships.

The much favoured Darcy Beccles from Barbados put up a good showing in the heavyweight division, and, after being named Mr. World in New York last month, he was fancied for the title. However, he came in for strong opposition from Austria's Carl Kainrath.

But it was Roger Walker of Australia who took the title ahead of Beccles, with Kainrath in third place.
