    The top Austrian skier, Franz Klammer, moved into the lead in the World Cup skiing championships at Schladming at Austria on Sunday (December 23rd) with a spectacular win in the men's downhill competition.

    Klammer, 20, covered the 3,145 metres course, over a descent of 915 metres, in just one minute, forty-one seconds, for an average speed of one-hundred-and-ten kilometres an hour. He was the only competitor to finish in under one minute forty-two seconds
    Swiss skier Roland Collumbin took second place in one minute forty-two seconds, a bare one-hundredth of a second ahead of his countryman, Bernhard Russi, current holder of the Olympic championship.

    More than 20,000 spectators watched the men's events in excellent weather.
