In South Africa Dr. Nthato Motlana, an influential unofficial community leader in Soweto has told blacks in the township to "gird your loins for the coming struggle for liberation". Dr. Motlana is Chairman of the Soweto Committee of Ten, set up two years ago as an unofficial body to represent the interests of the estimated one and a half million people who live in the township, outside Johannesburg. He was speaking at a weekend conference (23 September) called by the committee to start a Soweto Civic Association.
SYNOPSIS: The Holy Cross church in Soweto was packed with an enthusiastic crowd of more than five hundred. Dr. Motlana attacked the government's homeland policy under which blacks are assigned to tribal areas. He said it caused untold misery to millions of blacks, and can only be compared to Hitler's attempt at final solution.
The creation of the Soweto Civic Association attempt to involve ordinary Sowetans to their problems. South Africa's largest black card-carrying political movement, the Inkatha party, does not feel threatened. They say that black solidarity is the real importance, not individual differences.
