Background: Representatives of news agencies from East and Central Africa met in Kinshasa, Zaire, from 12 to 14 April in an effort to increase their cooperation in disseminating information on "the African reality".
The meeting unanimously decided that the agencies should set up an information pool as soon as possible "to improve the circulation and distribution of news about the region within the region".
It passed a resolution recommending the regular exchange of news bulletins, features, pictures and other material relevant to the region and called on the agencies to assist in organising the technical facilities necessary to make such an exchange possible.
The meeting urged a rapid increase in bilateral and multilateral agreements to pave the way for the opening of common news-gathering offices in important locations outside the region. It also suggested that journalists and technicians work in one another's countries on an exchange basis.
A follow-up meeting is expected to be held in Khartoum in October.
