    THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE DEMONSTRATED IN FOR LAMY, CHAD, ON SUNDAY IN PROTEST AGAINST LAST WEEK'S WITHDRAWAL OF THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC FROM THE UNION OF CENTRAL AFRICAN STATES (UEAC). CHAD AND THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC LEFT THE CENTRAL AFRICAN ECONOMIC AND CUSTOMS UNION (UDEAC) LAST APRIL AND FORMED UEAC WITH CONGO-KINSHASA. BUT ON MONDAY, PRESIDENT JEAN BEDEL BOKASSA, OF THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC WITHDREW HIS COUNTRY FROM UEAC AND REVERTED TO UDEAC.

    SUNDAY'S DEMONSTRATION WAS ORGANISED BY THE YOUTH SECTION OF CHAD'S RULING PROGRESSIVE PARTY. A GROUP OF PEOPLE READ OUT A PROTEST MESSAGE IN FRONT OF THE CENTRAL AFRICAN EMBASSY IN FORT LAMY. AMONG THE DEMONSTRATORS WAS THE MAYOR OF FORT LAMY M. MAHAMAT YAKOUMA.

    IN A SPEECH, IN FRONT OF THE CENTRAL AFRICAN EMBASSY, M. OUSMANE GAM, A MEMBER OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE PROGRESSIVE PARTY'S YOUTH SECTION, SAID THAT PRESIDENT BOKASSA WAS A TRAITOR TO AFRICA.

    PRESIDENT JEAN BEDEL BOKASSA WHO IS IN PARIS DECLARED ON WEDNESDAY THAT THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC WOULD NEVER INITIATE A BREAK IN DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH ITS NEIGHBOURS. HE SAID THAT IF FORCE WAS USED AGAINST HIS COUNTRY, HE WOULD APPEAL TO THE UNITED NATIONS AND THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY.
