  • Description

Several thousand students staged a mass rally in Kapung, Indonesian Timor, on Saturday (11 October) to demand military training and the right to fight in Portuguese Timor with pro-Indonesian forces.

The students presented their demands to the Governor of Indonesian Timor, El Tari, and the commander of police.

The students carried banners and chanted slogans like "we are ready for mobilisation" and "we stand behind the Government."
Governor El Tari told the students that he appreciated their offers of support and action.

In Portuguese Timor itself, the battle between pro-Indonesian forces and left-wing FRETILIN troops continues.

A Portuguese warship now stands off Dili, the capital of East Timor, and its arrival has made the pro-Indonesian forces even more vigilant.

It's believed eight FRETILIN (Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor) troops were killed in a border clash with armed men from the rival Timorese Democratic Union (UDT) and the People's Democratic Association of Timor (APODETI). UDT and APODETI both favour integration with Indonesia.

In the mean time, the Portuguese and Indonesian Governments negotiate about talks to decide the future of the colony.

Both sides have agreed in principle to the talks .. and want them to take place before the end of the month. The discussions will be at ministerial level, but where and exactly when they will take place is still unknown.
