  • Description

Police in Montevideo on Tuesday (19 October) discovered an underground chamber, in which they claimed Tupamaro guerrillas had been hiding. They said they captured six Tupamaros in a raid on the Punta Gorda area on the outskirts of Montevideo.

The underground chamber was found below the house of an architect, who said he knew nothing of the existence of the hiding place. Police said they discovered a number of arms in the hidden room, including 51 rifles, eight shotguns, two rocket launchers, and other explosives.

Police said as a result of the raid, they later recaptured two Tupamaros who escaped form jail during a mass breakout of 106 Tupamaros and five other convicts early in September -- shortly before the British Ambassador Geoffrey Jackson was released, after being held captive for eight months.

SYNOPSIS: This house on the outskirts of Montevideo was discovered to have an underground chamber. Police claim to have captured six Tupamaro guerrillas in hiding there. The house is occupied by an architect, who said he knew nothing of the hidden chamber.

A small concealed panel was found to lead to the underground room complete with running water, a ventilation system, and a device to warn the occupants of intruders. As a result of the raid on Tuesday, police claim to have later recaptured two Tupamaro guerrillas, who had escaped from jail in September. They were part of a mass break-out of one hundred and six Tupamaros, which took place shortly before British Ambassador Geoffrey Jackson was released.

On display at police headquarters were explosives and arms police say were discovered in the secret chamber. Among the weapons were fifty-one rifles, eight shotguns and one-thousand rounds of ammunition. Police demonstrated the use of masks found in the room, as well as one of two rocket launchers. Scores of rockets shells for the launchers were also discovered, according to police.
