  • Description

Malaysian police have cracked down on student demonstrations in Kuala Lumpur by raiding two universities and arresting most of the leaders responsible for the unrest.

About 1,200 para-military troops, armed with only cane sticks, raided the national university and the adjoining University of Malaya before dawn on Sunday (8 December) and arrested 22 people in a door-to-door search of all buildings and hostels.

He incidents ware reported and for the first time since student unrest over rising prices flared up last Tuesday (December 3), peace and quiet prevailed on Malaysia's university campuses.

Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak said the police action was taken to prevent unrest from spreading. He also rejected as false, student allegations that some Malays were starving, especially in ???ling district in the north, because of inflation.

Sunday's arrest brings to 1,160 the number of students and lecturers arrested since Tuesday, when more than 5,000 students took to the streets and battled police in the centre of Kuala Lumpur.

All but 62 of those detained have already been charged in court with unlawful assembly and released on bail ponding trial.
