    In Rabaul Court on New Britain today nine members of the native Mataungan Association were charged with riotous behaviour.

    The men were arrested following an outbreak of violence yesterday in which several people were injured.

    The Mataungan Association opposes the setting up of a multi-racial Local Government Council on the Gazelle Peninsula of New Britain.

    Among the nine in Court today were the President of the Mataungan Association Mr. Damion Kareku and a Vice-President, Mr. Daniel K?met. Kereku and another man were also charged with escaping from lawful custody.

    The nine men were remanded in custody until December the 22nd. All pleaded not guilty.

    The ABC's Rabaul Office days that police surrounded the court during the hearing.

    Later police armed with rifles, batons and tear gas took up positions at the lock-up where the men are being held.

    Earlier 200 police confronted a crowd of several hundred Tolai people who marched into Rabaul to protest at the arrests. The people moved off to a sports field for a meeting.
