The Lockheed C-5A Galaxy is the largest aircraft ever built. This weekend (June 6-7) the first one was delivered to the Air Force amid a storm of controversy.
The C-5A is so large that the Wright brothers' first flight covered less than the length of its cargo compartment. It is designed to carry any vehicle the army uses: trucks, buses, helicopters, tanks -- and the men to operate them -- to any trouble spot in the world in hours.
Congressional charges were made that Lockheed executives took advantage of their knowledge that the original contract cost figure would be exceeded by two billion dollars (about 340 million sterling) to make Stock Market gains. This charge was cleared last Tuesday (June 2). But the company still awaits a decision on its appeal to the Defence Department for 641 million dollars (266 million sterling) to continue work on the C-5A and other big defence contracts.
Another problem is that a hairline crack in the wing has developed which may necessitate the redesign and production of new wings for the eleven C-5As the Air Force is now flying and the 70 more on order.
