  • Description

A BLUE STREAK ROCKET FLASHED NEARLY 1,600 KILOMETRES (994 MILES) ACROSS AUSTRALIA IN TEN MINUTES TODAY (MONDAY) AFTER A SUCCESSFUL FIRING FROM WOOMERA AS PART OF THE EUROPEAN SPACE PROGRAMME.

THE 92-TON ROCKET - BEING TESTED AS THE FIRST OF THE EUROPEAN LAUNCHER DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION'S SATELLITE PROJECT - REACHED A HEIGHT OF 240 KILOMETRES (1509 MILES) AS IT SPED NORTHWARDS AT 22 TIMES THE SPEED OF SOUND.

MR. ALLEN FAIRHALL, AUSTRALIAN SUPPLY MINISTER, SAID IN CANDERRA THE BRITISH BLUE STREAK HAD SUCCESSFULLY ACHIEVED ALL TRIAL OBJECTIVES.

TODAY'S LAUNCH WAS EXPECTED TO YIELD MORE VALUABLE INFORMATION IN PROVING BLUE STREAK AS THE PRIMARY BOOSTER FOR A THREE-STAGE ELDO ROCKET DUE TO LAUNCH A SATELLITE FROM WOOMERA LATE NEXT YEAR.

THE NEXT BLUE STREAK FIRING WILL CARRY DUMMY SECOND AND THIRD STAGE ROCKETS AS A MOCK-UP OF THE EVENTUALLY COMPLETE ELDO SATELLITE LAUNCHER.

FRENCH AND GERMAN TECHNICIANS TODAY JOINED THE BRITISH AND AUSTRALIAN TEAMS AT LAKE HART, NEAR WOOMERA, TO GAIN EXPERIENCE FOR THE NEXT PHASE OF ELDO FIRINGS.
