    Background: DNEPROPETROVSK, U.S.S.R

Vladimir Aleinik, the 1983 European Cup winner, finished first after a closely-fought ten-metre board competition at the Soviet Diving Championships at Dnepropetrovsk in the Ukraine. The 25-year-old Minsk serviceman showed all his experience as he beat eleven other divers for the coveted title. Vyacheslav Troshin finished in second place after a consistent series of good scores while Vladimir Tkachev had to be content with third position following a poor last dive. Aleinik, one of the Soviet Union's finest divers, was a silver medal winner at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and also earned second place at the World Championships two years later.
