    THE MINT BUREAU OF THE JAPANESE FINANCE MINISTRY HAS A SPECIAL JOB ON HAND AT THE MOMENT - MAKING THE GOLD, SILVER, AND BRONZE AWARDS FOR THIS YEAR'S OLYMPIC GAMES.

    THE THREE MEDALS ARE ALL THE SAME SIZE - 2 3/3 INCHES IN DIAMETER AND 1/8 INCHES THICK. THE GOLD MEDALS WEIGHT 3.1 OUNCES (90 GRAMS); THE SILVER, 2.9 OUNCES (82 GRAMS); AND THE BRONZE, 2.4 OUNCES (69 GRAMS).

    ON THE BACK OF EACH MEDAL IS A DESIGN DEPICTING THE SPORT IT WAS PRESENTED FOR. THE DESIGNS WERE APPROVED BY THE OLYMPIC ORGANIZING COMMITTEE LAST DECEMBER, AND SINCE THEN THE MINT BUREAU HAVE BEEN PERFECTING METHODS OF MAKING THE MEDALS.

    EACH MEDAL TAKES 5 DAYS TO COMPLETE, AND SPECIAL EQUIPMENT HAS BEEN IMPORTED FROM FRANCE TO PRODUCE THEM.

    ALTOGETHER 914 MEDALS WILL BE PRESENTED: 300 GOLD; 300 SILVER; AND 314 BRONZE.
