  • Description

Cambodia's head of State, Prince Norodom Sihanouk, stood up in the United Nations General Assembly on Monday (6 october) and fiercely declared his country's independence from any foreign power.

Prince Sihanouk also punctuated his address with sharp attacks on the united States of America.

He said that without assistance from the "imperialistic Americans" the former Cambodian regime, headed by Lon Nol, would have fallen to the Communist backed forces much sooner "and with much less blood shed on both sides".

Referring to his country as "Kampuchea" throughout his speech, the Prince said that Cambodia would never join any power bloc, military alliance or organisation apart from the united nations and the non-aligned groups.

Prince Sihanouk said that Cambodia was embarking on the road to a new society free of exploitation "of man by man and other social shortcomings".

He said that agriculture, Cambodia's main resource, was being revitalised and he predicted that by the end of the year Cambodia would be exporting cereal.
