President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and President Hafez Assad of Syria met for a second round of formal talks in Cairo today (20 December). They are trying to work out a peaceful way of putting as end to the Arab-Israeli conflict.
SYNOPSIS: The formal sessions are being held at the Kubbeh Republican Palace. Senior cabinet minister are taking part. The Egyptian Prime Minister, Mamdouh Salem, arrived for Sunday's opening session, followed by General Mohamed el Gamassy, Deputy Prime Minister and War Minister.
President Sadat wants the Geneva conference with Israel called together again, if the problem of representing the Palestinians can be settled. President Assad's suggestion of a single Arab delegation, including the Palestine Liberation Organisation as well as Egypt, Syria and Jordan, is not acceptable to Israel. An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman has said his government would not meet the P.L.O. even on those terms. Egypt, and the Palestinians themselves, prefer four separate Arab delegations.
