• Short Summary

Mr. Chu Chen, the first Ambassador to Japan from the People's Republic of China, drove?

  • Description

Mr. Chu Chen, the first Ambassador to Japan from the People's Republic of China, drove to the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on Thursday (5 April) to present his credentials to Emperor Hirohito.

He was greeted at the Palace by Mr. Yukwai, Grand Chamberlain to the Imperial Household. The official accreditation of the Chinese Ambassador in Tokyo was the final, formal step in establishing diplomatic links at ambassadorial level between Japan and China.

Japan's envoy to Peking, Mr. Ogawa, presented his credentials on 3 March to Mr. Tung Pi-wu, Deputy Head of State of The People's Republic of China.

On his way to the Palace, the new Ambassador had encountered a demonstration organised by the right-wind Japanese Patriotic Party. Anti-Chinese slogans were shouted but there was no attempt to interfere with the Ambassador's journey.
