Background: The Lebanese army continued its security sweep through central and southern Beirut on October 6 in an operation that has aroused the concern of western nations involved in the city's peacekeeping force. The army has arrested about 200 people, mostly illegal residents, during identity checks and house-to-house searches which began on October 5. The operation started in central Beirut and spread to the former Palestinian strongholds in the south of the city. Diplomatic sources in Beirut say the ambassadors of the United States, France and Italy, whose troops form the multinational force, have voiced concern to Lebanon's President Amin Gemayel about reports of violence against some detainees. In Washington, the White House said it had been assured that the Lebanese authorities were safeguarding the rights of the arrested, who are mostly Palestinians. While the security sweep was continuing, Lebanon's re-appointed Prime Minister Shafiq al-Wazzan was trying to form a new cabinet. On October 5, the Sunni Moslem politician met with Mr. Camille Chamoun of the rightist Christian Chamounist faction. Mr. Chamoun, a former president of Lebanon, leads the second-largest faction within the Christian community -- after the Phalangists.
