    North Korean Foreign Minister, Ho Dam, has been meeting this week with Indian leaders in New Delhi. On Thursday (31 July) Mr. Hop met Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and later in the day met the President of India, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed.

    Mr. Ho is the highest ranking North Korean to visit India. He said his country is interested in expanding its contacts with India in the economic, technological and cultural fields.

    North Korea is also interested in joining the Non-Aligned Movement of which India is a leading member. On this subject, Mr. Ho said North Korea appreciated India's foreign policy and role in the Non-Aligned Movement. He also said North korea supported India's efforts to make the Indian Ocean a Zone of peace. He said, "We expressed our satisfaction at the Government of India's opposition to the expansion of the military base in the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia."
    Recently the United States has been expanding its military presence on the island.

    Mr. Ho also indicated that he discussed North Korea's wish to be unified with South Korea so that Korea would be admitted to the United Nations as a single nation.
