  • Description

Senior representatives of broadcasting organisations in Europe and the Middle East met on Monday (3 July) in Amman to discuss the possible exchange of television news by satellite.

The meeting was held at the headquarters of Jordan TV and lasted two days.

Among the European organisations represented were the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the national networks in Italy and France. ARD in West Germany was also represented.

The countries of the Arab World were represented by delegates from Syrian TV, Lebanese TV, Qatar TV, Jordanian TV and the Arabian States Broadcasting Union (ASBU).

As well as discussing ways of exchanging news by satellite, the Arab delegates looked at the possibility of providing recorded news for stations in the Arab World without Earth satellite receiving stations.

SYNOPSIS: At the headquarters of Jordanian Television of Monday--a meeting which cold bring major changes to the broadcasting of television news throughout the Arab world. Jordan is one of several Middle East nations with facilities for receiving television pictures by Earth satellite. The delegates arriving for the conference represented two groups of stations which hope to become linked from time to time to exchange news by satellite.

Technical problems--and matters of cost were among the topics discussed at the meeting-which lasted two days and paved the way for further talks of this kind.

Leading stations in the Arab World were represented by senior executives--so were stations in Europe. An important delegate was the representative of the European Broadcasting Union, to which the bulk of European television stations belong. "R-A-I" is the national television network in Italy, and "O-R-T-F", its counterpart in France. All delegates agreed afterwards that the talks had been useful.
