  • Description

CONGO-KINSHASA PRESIDENT JOSEPH MOBUTU RECENTLY TOOK A 30-MILE (48 KMS) TRIP UP THE CONGO RIVER IN A BRITISH HOVERCRAFT. THE PRESIDENT AND SEVERAL OF HIS CABINET MINISTERS MADE THE TRIP FROM KINSHASA TO THE PRESIDENT'S FARM.

THE ONE-HOUR TRIP UP THE CONGO WAS MADE IN THE HOVERCRAFT OF THE BRITISH TRANS-AFRICAN EXPEDITION WHICH HAD JUST COMPLETED A RECORD-BREAKING JOURNEY THROUGH WEST AFRICA. WITH THE PRESIDENT'S PARTY ALSO WENT THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR IN KINSHASA, SIR PAUL WRIGHT.

PRESIDENT MOBUTU IS SAID TO BE INTERESTED IN THE HOVERCRAFT WHICH SELLS AT GBP100-THOUSAND STERLING. TWO KINSHASA-BASED FIRMS ARE ALSO SAID TO HAVE MADE ENQUIRIES.

THE HOVERCRAFT HAD JUST COMPLETED THE LONGEST TRIP EVER TO BE UNDERTAKEN BY THIS KIND OF CRAFT, A 5-THOUSAND MILE (8-THOUSAND KMS) JOURNEY WHICH TOOK IN EIGHT COUNTRIES IN 83 DAYS.

HOWEVER, THE HOVERCRAFT PILOT DECIDED THAT ALTHOUGH IT WOULD BE FEASIBLE, HE HAD DECIDED AGAINST ATTEMPTING TO SHOOT THE RIVER RAPIDS ON THE WAY TO THE ATLANTIC FROM KINSHASA. INSTEAD, THE CRAFT WOULD BE DISMANTLED AND TAKEN BY ROAD TO THE PORT OF MATADI FOR SHIPPING BACK TO ENGLAND.
