    THRESHER WITH 129 MEN ABOARD SANK ON 10 APRIL DURING A TEST DIVE IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN, 220 MILES EAST OF BOSTON, IN 8,400 FEET OF WATER.

    AT THE PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NAVAL SHIPYARD (NEAR BOSTON) WHERE THE THRESHER WAS BUILT AND LAUNCHED, THE MEN AND MACHINES STOPPED TO PAY THEIR LAST FINAL RESPECTS ON 15 APRIL.

    A CROWD OF 5,000 WAS ON HAND TO HEAR THE EULOGIES AND PRAYERS DELIVERED BY CHAPLAINS OF THE CATHOLIC, PROTESTANT AND JEWISH FAITHS.

    IN THE SEATS OF HONOUR SAT THE WIDOWS AND CHILDREN OF THE MEN ABOARD THE THRESHER, ONE OF THE FASTEST AND DEEPEST-DIVING NUCLEAR SUBMARINES IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY.AMONG THEN WAS MRS.JOHN W.HARVEY, WIFE OF THE SUB'S SKIPPER, LT-COMMANDER JOHN W.HARVEY.

    WOMEN CHOKED BACK THEIR TEARS DURING THE CEREMONIES.THEN THEY BROKE DOWN AND CRIED OPENLY AS A U.S.MARINE CORPS FIRING SQUAD FIRED THREE VOLLEYS AND A BUGLER BLEW "TAPS".
