  • Description

EIGHT POLICEMAN WERE INJURED -- ONE OF THEM SERIOUSLY -- AND SIX CHINESE STUDENTS HURT IN SINGAPORE ON FRIDAY (NOVEMBER 4), WHEN THE STUDENTS PROTESTED ABOUT PROPOSED CHANGES IN THEIR SCHOOL'S EDUCATIONAL POLICY.

PASSERS-BY WERE INJURED BY BOTTLES AND STONES AS MORE THAN 200 STUDENTS FROM THE CHINESE-LANGUAGE NGEE ANN COLLEGE MARCHED ON THE CITY HALL AND BROKE THROUGH A POLICE BARRICADE.

THE STUDENTS SMASHED FLOODLIGHTS AND HURLED BOTTLES AND STONES AT THE POLICE, WHO MADE REPEATED BATON CHARGES. A GOVERNMENT STATEMENT SAID THAT TEN STUDENTS HAD BEEN ARRESTED.

PROPOSED CHANGES IN THE EDUCATION POLICY OF THE SCHOOL, AND A DECISION TO ASK FOR GOVERNMENT AID, CAUSED THE STUDENTS' PROTEST. THEY BELIEVED THE PLAN WOULD BRING ABOUT PARTIAL GOVERNMENT CONTROL OVER THE COLLEGE.

THE STUDENTS WERE ATTEMPTING TO BRING THEIR PROTEST TO THE ATTENTION OF SINGAPORE'S PRIME MINISTER, LEE KUAN YEW, AT THE CITY HALL.

THE SCENE OF THE CLASH WAS LITTERED WITH BROKEN BOTTLES, CUPS, BANNERS AND OTHER DEBRIS. MOST OF THE CITY HALL'S EXTERIOR LIGHTING SYSTEM WAS WRECKED.
