  • Description

Hockey... and in the fourth World Cup in Buenos Aires, the Australians are beginning to show the kind of form that won them a silver medal in the Montreal Olympics. On Wednesday (22 March) they suffered a set-back, when beaten 2-0 by India, but on Good Friday (24 March) they bounced back with a convincing 5-2 victory over Belgium. The Australians are now tucked in behind West Germany in Group 'A', and look set for a semifinal place.

SYNOPSIS: The Australians, playing from right to left in the dark shirts were soon on the offensive and pushed the ball around with a lot of confidence.

The Belgians were still looking for their first victory.

The Australians built their attacks well, and with Argentine troops looking on, they went in front through Cooke in the 22nd minute.

Belgium hit back strongly, and seven minutes later Miserque put them level.

More Australian pressure followed, and Charlesworth put them back in front just before the interval.

Throughout the match argentine troops were always well to the fore.

Early in the second half Dancer made it 3-1 to Australia.

Cooke got a fourth for Australia in the 48th minute.

With 63 minutes gone Cooke completed his hat-trick.

Four minutes from time Van Tuyckom pulled one back for Belgium, but it was too late... 5-2 to Australia.

This was a much better performance by the Australians, whose next match was against Poland.
