Background: The former Indian Prime Minister, Mrs Indira Gandhi, has attacked India's Janata government for failing to control increasing violence in the country. She told supporters at a rally in Madras that the government was unable to find a solution to the daily deterioration of law and order.

SYNOPSIS: Mrs Gandhi's attack came as the Janata Cabinet decided to go ahead with plans to try her for alleged offences committed during her Emergency rule in 1975.

In December she was jailed for a week by Parliament for contempt of the House and breach of Parliamentary privilege. Now she faces several more charges, including refusal to give evidence before the commission investigating her Emergency Rule, and obtaining jeeps illegally for electioneering. Despite this, Mrs Gandhi is attracting increasing political support in many parts of the country.

As part of her political comeback, Mrs Gandhi has patched up the split between her breakaway group and the official Congress Party.

The party divide after her election defeat in 177. Now she is concentrating her attacks on the Janata government.
