    THIS COVERAGE IS OF THE SECOND DAY, WHEN PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA ATTENDED AND PERFORMED THE OFFICIAL OPENING.

    SOME 18 FOREIGN GOVERNMENTS EXHIBITED THEIR WARES AT THE SHOW.

    SYNOPSIS: THE FIVE-DAY ANNUAL NAIROBI AGRICULTURAL AND TRADE SHOW, THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ITS KIND IN KENYA, AND ATTRACTING INTER-NATIONAL EXHIBITORS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, OPENED IN THE KENYAN CAPITAL ON TUESDAY (SEPTEMBER 29) PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA ATTENDED ON WEDNESDAY, TO PERFORM THE OFFICIAL OPENING CATTLE ENTRIES WERE SLIGHTLY LOWER THIS YEAR, BUT THE QUALITY WAS SAID BY THE JUDGES TO BE OF A VERY HIGH STANDARD. THERE WAS THE USUAL ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION FOR THE PARADE OF BEEF ON THE HOOF, INCLUDING SOME MAGNIFICENT BULLS. CARCASS CLASSES SHOWED AN INCREASE IN EXHIBITORS.

    PRESIDENT KENYATTA SAID IN HIS SPEECH AT THE SHOW THAT THE EXHIBITS REFLECTED THE BUOYANCY OF FARMING IN KENYA. HE CALLED FOR THE RETENTION BY SMALL FARMERS OF TRADITIONAL CROPS SUCH AS CASSAVA, YAMS AND SWEET POTATOES, ALL OF THEM WELL KNOWN FOR THEIR RESISTANCE TO DROUGHT. HE ALSO CALLED FOR DIVERSIFICATION IN CROPS TO INCREASE FOOD PRODUCTION, AND SO AVOID FOOD SHORTAGE IN THE FUTURE.

    SOME 18 FOREIGN GOVERNMENTS WERE SHOWING THEIR WARES IN THE FIVE-DAY SHOW, WITH EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AMONG THEM.

    ON THE BRITISH STAND, 41 FIRMS WERE EXHIBITING. SIX PIGS WERE PRESENTED TO THE KENYA AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION TO HELP KENYA'S BREEDING PROGRAMME.

    THE ZAMBIAN STAND AHOWED A FIM ON COPPER MINING, AND COPPER PRODUCTS WERE ON DISPLAY. PRESIDENT KENYATTA VISITED THE STAND IN THE COMPANY OF THE ZAMBIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER ALBERT KALYATI. THE AUSTRALIAN PAVILION SHOWED AGRICULTURAL EQUIPMENT.

    SWEDEN AND DENMARK, AT A JOINT STAND, SHOWED HOUSEHOLD GOODS, FOOD, OFFICE EQUIPMENT AND MACHINERY, AND RELICS OF THE WARSHIP WASA, SUNK IN STOCKHOLM HARBOUR IN 1628.
