  • Description

Flags of West Germany fly with those of German states controlled by the Soviet Union, on the sixth anniversary of the East Berlin rising, at a ceremony in the Bundestag, Bonn, attended by President Theodor Heuss, Chancellor Adenauer and Presidential candidate Heinrich Luebke.

In the rising June 17 1953, 25 people died in hopeless resistance against Russian tanks.

Unity Day, celebrated throughout West Germany and West Berlin is now a public holiday, with factories, banks, offices, shops closed and meeting attended by tens of thousands of people.

This day of commemoration is to remember them - as brother Germans-but the major aim is to foster the desire for reunification of the divided country.
